Ethiopia: Single Mothers
Support for single Mothers in Burayu
Single mothers who have little schooling or vocational training are socially marginalised all over the world. This does not only affect them individually, but also their children. Mothers who bring up their children alone are usually forced to earn their living at low wages under extremely poor working conditions and in many places are also often exposed to sexualised violence. At the same time, they are usually unaware of their rights and do not know what they are entitled to in terms of state support.
Our Ethiopian Partner Church Mekane Yesus organises support to such women in Burayu, a town of about 280.000 people about 15 kilometers west of Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia in order to contribute to the wellbeing of single mothers and their children living in Burayu.
The project targets 40 female headed households with an estimated population of 200 (52% female) living in six araes of Burayu. It seeks to increase and diversify household income and enhancing gender justice among the communities.
