ELMinar: End of 16days - Prevention of genderbased violence in Tepi, Ethiopia

Webinar in English on December 10th 2026, 2 p.m.

The city of Tepi in the Southwest Ethiopia Peoples Region is characterized by cultural diversity, but faces deep-seated social problems. Ethnic tensions, exacerbated by historical conflicts and competition for resources, have led to mistrust and occasional outbreaks of violence. At the same time, women are severely disadvantaged in social, economic, and political spheres. This double burden of ethnic conflict and gender inequality jeopardizes the social stability and sustainable development of the region.

Traditional norms and patriarchal structures prevent women from participating equally in decision-making processes, peacebuilding, and local governance. Women are often excluded from leadership positions and have limited access to resources and economic opportunities. This fosters economic dependency and exacerbates social inequalities, thereby weakening the potential of the entire community.

Empowering women is therefore not only a matter of justice, but also a key lever for peace and development. Women involved in dialogue, administration, and the economy can actively contribute to overcoming ethnic tensions and promoting cooperation.

The project follows a community-based approach with a focus on women's empowerment and inclusive dialogue. Planned measures include training, mentoring, economic support, and the creation of safe spaces for interethnic exchange. The goal is to strengthen local capacities, promote gender equality, and thus lay the foundation for a peaceful, just, and inclusive Tepi.
