International Gender Summer School 2026
Global perspectives on gender equality
From 21 to 28 June 2026, Lilongwe (Malawi) became a venue for international encounters and theological exchange. Participants from nine countries gathered at the International Gender Summer Academy to reflect together on gender justice, participation and the role of the churches in different social contexts. The Summer Academy was organised by the Evangelical Lutheran Mission (ELM) and the Evangelical Women’s* Team of the Regional Church of Hanover in collaboration with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi (ELCM). It was organised by Gabriele De Bona and Rev. Susanne Paul, supported by Rev. Bertha Munkhondya (ELCM) and Lilana Kasper, Executive Director of the Lutheran Community in Southern Africa (LUCSA). Biblical reflections, international discussions and workshops led by the participants shaped the week and brought the diversity of perspectives to life.
Summer is over – but the Academy lives on
The event in Malawi also marks the end of a small tradition: in future, the programme will be known as the International Gender Academy. The new name reflects its international focus. Whilst it is winter in the southern hemisphere at the end of June, participants from other regions of the world associate this time of year with summer. The term ‘Summer Academy’ therefore does not suit everyone equally. With the new name, the focus will be placed even more strongly on collaborative learning, international exchange and global partnership.
