Ethiopia: Dignity and protection for women
Promoting the rights, dignity and protection of women and girls.
Working together to advance the rights, dignity and protection of women and girls: in southern Ethiopia, the town of Tepi, with a population of just over 55,000, is the region’s economic and social hub. Traditional norms and patriarchal structures prevent women from participating on an equal footing in decision-making processes, peace-building and local government. Women are often excluded from leadership positions and have only limited access to resources and economic opportunities.
A project run by the Mekane Yesus Church aims to change this and, through a series of events, encourage people to understand the harmful effects of gender-based violence, recognise the available courses of action and take joint responsibility for the protection of women and girls.
Another key component is a six-month practical vocational training programme:
five women are taking part in a tailoring course and five in a hairdressing course, enabling them to acquire skills with which they can improve their livelihoods and support their families financially.
To train and support a woman over a two-year period, the partner church requires 700 euros, or approximately 30 euros per month.
Please support the partner church in Ethiopia with your donation so that it can offer such projects for women and girls, stand up for their rights alongside them, and give them the opportunity to provide for their families independently.
