Dear friends of ELM,
we are very pleased to invite you to the following event:
German summary: Diese ELM-Seminarreihe beschäftigt sich mit der Zukunftsfähigkeit von Kirchen international. Gemeinsam mit Christ*innen aus der internationalen Ökumene suchen wir nach kreativen und hoffnungsbewegten Lösungen für typische Probleme unserer Kirchengemeinden. Die Konferenzsprache ist Englisch.
The Sunday morning church service has traditionally played a central role in congregational life. It is often seen as the "filling station", where believers are spiritually renewed before starting a new week. In the past, attending church on Sunday morning was a key marker of Christian identity.
But is the 10:00 am Sunday service - with hymns, a sermon and liturgy - still the ideal format for Christians of all ages and cultures worldwide? This long-standing model is increasingly being questioned, and new alternatives are emerging.
Is a single meeting time for all congregation members (still) necessary? How can compromises be found in diverse congregations–diverse in age, culture, education, political views, and professional backgrounds? These and related questions will be explored in our upcoming ELMinar.
We are pleased to once again welcome two wonderful speakers who will engage us on this topic:
• Ms. Themba Makhoba (40 years old) is Head of Sales at a telecommunications company, a mother of three children (aged 10 to 17), and a resident of Ballito, north of Durban, South Africa. She is an active member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church (ELCSA), serving as congregational treasurer, lay preacher, and a member of the Prayer Women’s League.
• Mr. Niels von Türck (51 years old) is currently ELM Secretary for International Volunteer Services. Previously, he was trained as a boat builder, childcare teacher, and youth pastor. He lives in Hermannsburg, Germany, with his wife and daughter. He has served on the local congregational council and participated in a small group ministry.
