Dear readers of the English version of our newsletter, from now on you can also have the ELM website automatically translated into English and other languages. Please use the small selection box at the top right of our website.
Today I would like to take you on a short excursion that I consider exemplary of the work at ELM. Two professional colleagues, one from Hermannsburg in Germany and one from Durban in South Africa, have worked together on the alphabet. A for awareness, R for racism, S for sexuality and U for uniform are just some of the terms that Dr. Joe Lüdemann and Ntuthuko Nkosi have reflected on from their respective cultural backgrounds. They share their thoughts with us in short, entertaining video clips. The series starts on the ELM website, but will also accompany you on our social media channels (e. g. instagram/elm_hermannsburg/, facebook.com/elm.projekte/) in the coming weeks and hopefully provide you with numerous interesting insights into how different the worlds are in which we as Lutheran Christians are travelling.
The fact that Joe and Ntuthuko are sitting next to each other laughing despite all their differences reflects their common convication that when we recognise the true God, we are all one. I also spoke about this in the sermon which I gave on the occasion of my installation at the Mission Festival: "Recognising the one true God and Jesus Christ also means recognising the fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, freedom, justice and peace. Travelling with other religions and fellow human beings is mission, too - mission justice!"
We celebrated this community journey over three days in June: with a rousing gospel concert, two intensive church services, the installation of myself and Holger Nerlich as Managing Director, the deployment of the volunteers and countless encounters on the sidelines. I am sure that everyone who took part in the celebrations will often think back to this feeling of community in the coming weeks and months when it is time to overcome the hurdles of everyday life.
I wish you all "Uongozi wa Mungu" - God's accompaniment.
Yours,
Dr. Emmanuel Kileo
